Create a Blanket

Thank you so much for your interest in creating a blanket! The blanket you create will be a little cwtch (hug) in the post for both the baby and the mother receiving it, as it will physically provide comfort to the baby, but also metaphorically provide comfort to the mother, as she will know that it has been created by someone thinking of her, and hopefully bring them a little joy during a challenging period of life.

Blanket Guide

You can create a blanket by knitting, crochet or quilting. It would be great for these blankets to represent those creating them, so feel free to create them within your own style, whilst following the requirements, which are outlined below.

Yarn/Fabric

All yarn or fabric used in the creation of the blanket must be machine washable, so that busy mums are able to put it in with the rest of their washing as and when needed.

It’s great if you use specific baby yarn, as the recipient can be told that it is safe for use on sensitive skin. However do not worry if you don’t have baby yarn, you can use any yarn, and the recipient will be advised to use it over clothing (i.e. to cover the baby in a buggy).

Any weight of fabric or yarn is fine to use, use whichever you feel most at ease working with. If you are a beginner perhaps try a Double Knit or Aran weight yarn.

Size

As a minimum all blankets should be 76cm x 89cm or 30inches x 35inches.

This sizes have been chosen so that a blanket will be big enough to cwtch each baby, but if you are a beginner and it seems overwhelmingly large it would still be great for you to be involved. Smaller blankets from beginners are happily accepted, and can be sent to the youngest babies of those nominated.

Pattern and Colour

You are welcome to follow any pattern of your choosing whilst creating your blanket. Please just make sure there are no large gaps in the blanket big enough for little hands or feet to get caught in, especially if you are making a blanket for 0-1 year olds.

Pick any colours you like for your blanket! You don’t need to use just traditional baby colours, pick whichever colours bring you joy. Some blankets will be sent to pregnant mothers who do not yet know the sex of their baby, so unisex blankets are particularly handy, but blankets designed particularly for a baby boy or baby girl are very welcome too!

Finishing the blanket

Please sew in the ends to your blankets securely, so that there are no loose threads for little hands to pull, and that if accidentally caught up in something it would not unravel.

Although they look pretty please refrain from adding any embellishments to your blanket, as items like buttons and sequins could become loose and become a choking hazard to the baby.

I’ve finished my blanket, now what?

Congratulations on finishing your blanket! Please get in contact so that you can be given the address to post it to.

Please wrap your blanket in a clean bag or paper before any further packaging for postage or drop off, in order to keep it protected in transit.

Unfortunately the project is currently unable to reimburse the cost of posting your blanket to us.
